Damien Hirst- Newport Street Gallery

icon
Damien Hirst, one of the UK's most famous modern artists, decided to open his own gallery in Vauxhall, south London.

Opening on 8th October 2015, Newport Street Gallery is the realisation of Hirst’s long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. Gallery is designed by architects Caruso St John and spans 37,000 square feet, which includes a restaurant and shop.

Its construction has involved the conversion of three listed Victorian buildings. One of the central galleries has a height of 11 metres and the roof of the tallest building has been specifically designed to allow for the installation of large sculptures.

Newport Street Gallery presents exhibitions not only of work from Damien Hirst’s art collection. He mentions “This gallery is an incredible space with an amazing sense of history, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to wear a curatorial hat for a change, I couldn’t be happier.”

Gallery opens with “Power Stations”, a solo exhibition of John Hoyland (1934-2011) and will be on display until 3rd April 2016.
