The Proust Effect

icon
Metamatic:taf is excited to open the new art season 2015-2016 on Thursday 24 September 2015 at 20.30 with the exhibition The Proust Effect.

Setting off from the indissoluble connection between memory and the senses, the exhibition touches upon the forgotten memories retrieved from the unconscious merely through a sensorial input.

The title of the exhibition is inspired by Marcel Proust and his novel À la recherche du temps perdu (In search of lost time). It denotes the experience of the vivid revival of past incidents through sensorial inputs, such as the taste of a French madeleine biscuit dipped in tea that triggered the narrator’s involuntary memory, taking him back to childhood moments.

Thirteen artists explore the, yet to be chartographed, realm of human senses, investigating the way recollections are activated, affected by each other and related to vision, touch, smell, taste and hearing. Through various means and practices like installations, sculpture, video and performance, the artists unfold personal experiences, outlining multiple associative routes between memory and the senses.
